We start as always with Andrew and the Dewing Grain market report for week commencing 27th January 2020.

In Farmchat Andrew and Webby meet with our second Nuffield Scholar of recent weeks, Sam Steggles of Fielding Cottage. 10 years ago Sam went on holiday and came home with 10 goats. Starting off at farmers’ markets, his cheese-making business has gone from strength to strength and now supplies supermarkets and farm shops. Sam talks about the importance of following your dreams and ignoring the naysayers and how grants have helped his business to grow. He’ll soon be heading off to Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and, possibly, China in his capacity as Nuffield Scholar, focusing on food business growth.

In a change to our normal format, this week we sample a couple of cheeses brought along by Sam: Norfolk Mardler and Wensum White. Based on the amount Andrew and Webby put away, both were a big hit.

We start this week with Andrew's latest thoughts on the markets in the Dewing Grain market report for week commencing 9th December 2019.

In Farmchat Andrew meets up with Lizzie Emmett who is the Upper Wensum Cluster Farm Advisor - working directly for a group of 23 famers primarily involved in keeping the Wensum river water quality really good to avoid the threat of the surrounding farms being grassed over.

Lizzie explains how she is helping to manage the farms in the Wensum to reduce run off - using a whole host of difference methods from silt trapping to reintroducing ponds.

We start this week with Andrew's Dewing Grain market report for week commencing 25th November 2019.

In this week's Farmchat we have part two of Andrew and Ian's meeting with Jake Fiennes, General Manager of conservation at Holkham. They kick off with the controversial question of whether shooting goes hand in hand with conservation. With public spending on UK biodiversity down 42% proportionally on GDP - they discuss financial support for farmers and the proposal of payment for public goods - services farmers could deliver such as soil health and biodiversity alongside food production.

They also discuss the change in rape seed dressings and the lack of bees that were ever found in rape seed crops and increasing evidence of neonics negative effects on wildlife and the advantages of different drilling times for rape seed post the ban.

Jake is clear that he isn't an environmentalist and carefully calls himself a land manager and has many useful suggestions on how farmers can enrich their farming environments - such as stopping farming the crap and the use of long straw manure. He has some convincing arguments in favour of British beef farming - urging people not to associate American grain fed bovine with grass-fed beef and making the point that grass is a better carbon sink that a conifer forest. Jake is campaigning for a new award at the farmers weekly. Eventually they break open the beer- Redwell West Coast Pale Ale as Jake agrees to record a second part which will be out soon.
